What I've Been Reading

I've had a lot of time on my hands since we've moved, so I've been doing a lot of reading!  Here's what I've read recently:

Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got Married by Gary Chapman.  A different approach to a book about marriage, but I thought it was really good.  I would definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn't gotten married yet.  It covered a lot of the things Caleb and I learned during our first year of marriage.

Think by John Piper.  I'm still at the very beginning of this one, but I like it.  It's about going beyond the emotions and experience of God to thinking carefully about God.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen.  I have to admit this was not my favorite Austen work.  It was a slow read and a bit tough to get through, but I did like the overall storyline.  After reading it, I watched the movie and enjoyed that a whole lot more.

Will Write For Food by Dianne Jacob.  I loved this one.  She covers all aspects of writing about food and it was really informative but also interesting.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.  This was probably the weirdest book I've read in a while.  If you can get past the ghost aspect of the story, it is an enjoyable read.  If you liked The Time Traveler's Wife you'll probably like this one too.

Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs.  Another marriage book.  This one focuses on how to first understand each other's needs, and then how to practically meet them.

What should I read next??  I need some good book recommendations!  (For other books that I've recently read, see here.)

  2. I'll definitely have to check out the book by Gary Chapman. I like his books. I just finished a great book called, Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. It follows the life of a little girl that gets sent to Moloka'i, the leprosy colony in Hawaii. It's a fascinating book. It made me laugh and cry :) If you like historical fiction, it's a read I would recommend.

  8. oooh you have to tell me more about think! i was looking into buying it because i generally think more about God than i have emotional experiences, but when i was skimming it it looked like it was actually written for people who are the opposite of me to learn how to think about God. soo which is it?

  9. Another great book is Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. I'm currently reading Radical by David Platt and it is AMAZING. Nathan Smith talked about it this summer during one of his sermons, so I brought it back with me. It gives such a different view of what Christians should be doing.

  12. Love and Respect sounds like a really good book. A lot of times arguments are mis-communications and then afterward we realize this is the case. Thanks for the reads!

  15. For something in the food genre, I recommend "Comfort Me With Apples"-by Ruth Reichl. She is a former restaurant critic and editor & chief of Gourmet magazine. The book even includes some of her favorite recipes at the time the storyline takes place. For historical fiction, I think you might like "Sarah's Key"-by Tatiana Rosnay. It was a bit of an interesting read and flips back and forth between modern day and France during WWII. As for general fiction, I can say I enjoyed, "Nightingale Woods"-by Stella Gibbson....good satire.

  16. Hmmm...maybe that Gary Chapman book should be a required book for all couples to read once engaged! I was a criminal justice major so my reads can be a little dark but I just finished reading "Stolen Life" by Jaycee Dugard. She was the girl who was kidnapped and found living in her captor's backyard after 18 years. Incredibly sad how the justice system let her down but I was amazed at what a beautiful soul she became despite what happened to her!

  17. I just finished Mansfield Park myself. I actually loved it because the heroine wasn't quintessentially "Austen". I thought it was a nice change of pace :

I'll have to watch the movie though. Good idea!

  28. Book post, yay!

I recently finished One Day by David Nicholls and I can recommend it. I wanted to read it before seeing the film. It's really beautiful.

Now I'm reading a book that had my heart and soul from page one. It's called The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. It's simply a masterpiece.

If you like W. Somerset Maugham, I can recommend The Razor's Edge. I recently finished that one too and it's a classic.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

PS. I really like the cornbread recipe you posted, I have to try it because it this house we love veggie chilli.
