Let's Talk About Books

Let's talk about books.  How do you decide what to read?  Do you buy every book you read?  Where do you buy them? I'm a bit of a book nerd, so I'd love to know!

When I'm looking for my next read, I browse through bookstores and the best sellers lists looking for a title or a cover to catch my eye.  (I totally judge a book by its cover, but I've read a ton of great books so I'm okay with it.)  I usually will get the book from the library so I don't have to buy every single book I read.

When I want to buy a book, I like to buy from one of these places:

- a used bookstore.  We have a really big one here and I've gotten a ton of really cheap books.

- Amazon.  New books are almost always cheaper than anywhere else!  I recommend getting an Amazon prime account - it's free 1 or 2-day shipping!

Thriftbooks.  This site pulls used books from all over the country.  The books are cheap and shipping is always free!  And for each additional book you buy from the same shipping location, they take off 50 cents!

So, tell me where you get your books and what you like to read!

  3. I'm like you and like to browse...and I totally judge a book by its cover! I am now totally just reading on the Kindle b/c I just don't have enough space for so many books...and I read so much faster!

  4. I should buy stock in Amazon lol I always get my books used from there. Recently with Borders going out of business and we lost our Barnes and Noble, I've been reduced to just amazon and half price books. I am a big reader, though I haven't had as much time to this fall. My favorite types of books are memoirs because I like to learn about what past experiences make people the way they are today. I like to read fiction on the beach and on airplanes but other than that I'm a non-fiction gal. What is your favorite kind of book?

  6. I like Christian romance fiction, so I buy a lot of my books from Christianbooks.com :) I'm not one to read from the bestseller's list, but I do have "The Help" sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to read it :)

P.S. I left you a little something over at my blog! http://themommyhoodadventure.blogspot.com/2011/11/little-miss-popular.html

  7. I'm such an avid reader too! I love being able to check books out from the library (YAY for saving money!) and I cannot wait until my library loans ebooks for my kindle. That'll be awesome!

  9. I did not know about that website, Thriftbooks! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Need to check it out. I like to buy my books used, but with thrift stores it's hit or miss. You never know what you're going to come out with. And that's kind of the charm, isn't it?

  10. I am a certified bibliophile! A lot of our books come from the thrift stores or this great used book store we go to. Occasionally I buy something off Amazon or go to Barnes and Noble. As to what I read...that varies depending on my mood. At the moment I am reading The History of Love by Nicole Krauss, but once I finish I have a book called Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls that I want to read. :)

  11. We have a great used bookstore here called Mr. K's. When I was in school and taking lots of education classes I would buy children's books there, and now that's where I get tons of my Christian books. Most paperbacks are $3-$5. I got the whole O'Malley series for $3 a book, which I bought and read over the course of a year.

  13. I inherited a giant library when I married my husband. We have one wall that is covered from floor to ceiling in bookshelves. I did have to round out the collection with some Jane Austen, but otherwise I have a ton of books to pull from for the next decade or two before buying any for myself.

  14. I am so excited to check out Thriftbooks! My book buying has been out of control lately...I've run out of room on all of my bookshelves. Have you read anything by Lisa See? I think you would like her books. I read her book Shanghai Girls and really enjoyed it.

  15. Hmm. These are great questions. I've never really thought about how I pick what I read. Usually I hear something is hilarious and check it out myself. Sometimes I look for things that are relative to the current events I follow, etc. Usually awesome reads just fall in my lap, and very rarely are they on Oprah's book club.

  16. I don't buy a lot of books because I rarely re-read a book. But I love checking books out from the library and more and more often I listen to audiobooks because I can do it while I am crafting or blogging.

  18. I love books and could stay up all night reading a good book! I love Southern authors like Fannie Flagg (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Welcome to the World Baby Girl), Rick Bragg (Ava's Man and All Over But the Shoutin'). The Help was an awesome book. I am currently going through the Sookie Stackhouse books that have taken to a whole new level of fantasy. I like to go to the library now, but do occassionally buy a book or browse their free books based on its cover/title from Amazon for my Kindle! Great post!

  19. I get all of my books from the library, but before I go I get ideas from my mom (who reads a lot), or from browsing the book section at Target, to see what is new and popular. And I get a lot of ideas from fellow bloggers : )

  21. Oh my, books, were would I be without books?!! I'd say that I buy 98% of my books from Amazon. We have a free shipping to Belgium if we buy for a certain amount and we save a lot on that. I've always been a library girl so I get the books I feel no need to own at the library.

I wouldn't say that I'm much of a best-seller reader, I'm more into classics than contemporaries. Usually I get reading tips from interviews in magazines or some articles ... and from bloggers ;-)
