Mascara

My best friend Heather asked a while back if I would post about mascara: what kinds I've tried, what I liked, what I didn't.  Because she's getting married on Saturday (yay!), I decided today would be the day.  I think mascara is pretty subjective--we all have different eyelashes and different eye shapes, which means we're going to want different things from our mascara.  With that being said, I do think it helps to hear why others like a certain brand of mascara, in case we're looking for the same thing.  So these are the mascaras that are in my makeup bag now, and here is why I have not liked or liked them.

Maybelline Great Lash - Blackest Black
$4.24 at Target
You get what you pay for.  The wand is tiny and the bristles
are really spread out and short.  I think it goes on messy
and I don't like this one.

Covergirl Exact Eyelights - Black Gold
$7.24 at Target
I tried this because I wanted a really natural-looking
mascara.  Well, this was a little too natural for me.  You're
supposed to pick the color to matches your eye color and
enhance it, but there was no enhancement at all.  Thumbs down.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Waterproof - Very Black
$6.94 at Target
This is my favorite mascara for length.  I wear this a lot
without eyeliner, because I think the extra length it
gives my eyelashes is enough oomph that I don't need
eyeliner.  Or sometimes I put a coat or two of this on for
length before another mascara for more volume.  And I think this is
the only waterproof mascara I use.

Physicians Formula Organic Mascara - Ultra Black
$8.74 at Target
This is 100% natural, hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and
fragrance free.  So if you're into that, this is the mascara
for you.  This is really amazing mascara though.  When
I put it on, my eyelashes don't feel heavy or weighed down like
with other mascaras.  It feels very light, but still looks good.
It also doesn't clump or make your eyelashes brittle.  My eyelashes
felt soft and like I wasn't wearing any mascara!  This is
becoming a fast favorite.

Maybelline Volum' Express - Classic Black
$5.94 at Target
I think this is my second favorite, which is awesome because
it's one of the cheaper ones I have!  It does give good volume,
but it's not too overwhelming for the daytime.  I like wearing
this whether I want a more natural look without eyeliner
or a more definition with eyeliner.  A great
mascara for a great price!

Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara - Black
$15 at Mary Kay
This is my all-time favorite mascara.  I've been wearing
MK mascara since 11th grade and I will probably use it
the rest of my life.  This is the mascara that has everything I'm looking for.
It adds length, gives amazing volume, is super black, and
doesn't feel sticky or clumpy.  It is double what you will
pay for a lot of drugstore mascaras, but it is so worth it.

This is just my opinion on some of the mascara I've tried.  What mascara are you using?  I'm always up for trying something new!

  1. Hmmm... I don't really wear mascara regularly. The Physicians Formula Organic one sounds good to me. I don't like it when my lashes feel all brittle and clumped together.

  2. oh my goodniss this was such a fun post! i love mascara and it is the one item of makeup in which i have to be very selective and picky about because i have long, stubborn lashes. cheep stuff simply will not do. i have tried dozens of brands, but the one that i've stuck with for a while now that works for me is the yellow mabelline volum express! the funny thing about it though is, i don't like the way it applies when it's brand new. i like it when it's a little old. so after it's been open about 1 1/2 is when it begins to start working the best, i guess when it's a little "thick". it makes me lashes dark, thick, and really enhances the length! so with that being said about my regular favorite, my ALL time favorite that i buy only on occasion because it is so expensive, is Too Faced "Lash Injection" for $20 from Ulta or Sephora. The brush and bristles are so big and thick you might think it a little odd at first. But it's perfect and it makes your lashes SUPER think and long and it's just fabulous. That is my favorite, but like I said it's a little pricey.
Thanks for the post Sherri this was fun! :)

  3. I really enjoy reading your blog and love all the yummy recipes. :) I decided it's about time I said something. One of my favorite types of mascara is the neutrogena weightless volume, it doesn't clump or flake and beat of all it looks really natural. Saying that, don't puck this for evening! 5. I am so not a mascara wearer! Less is way more for me! But for fancy occasions I may try the organic one.
    Thanks for the list!

  6. I usually use cheapie ones from Target...I've tried a few that you listed and have been satisfied. I have naturally long, dark and thick eyelashes (lucky me!) so I can get away with ones that aren't fantastic.

However, I LOVE definicils by lancome and Dior DiorShow. They are the best ever....but you're paying for it for sure.
